Claude is one of the most capable AI assistants available in 2026, but most people are getting a fraction of what it can do. The difference isn’t intelligence — it’s how you frame the conversation.

Here’s what actually changes the quality of responses.

Give Context, Not Just a Request

The single biggest lever you have is context. Compare these two prompts:

Weak: “Write a marketing email.”

Strong: “Write a marketing email for a new project management tool aimed at freelance designers. The tone should be direct and practical, not hype-y. The email is going to a cold list of 500 people who signed up for our waitlist six months ago. Main goal is to get them to try the free plan.”

Claude will produce a dramatically better output from the second prompt because it knows the audience, the tone, the context, and the goal. Don’t make Claude guess what you want.

Assign a Role

Claude performs better when given a clear persona for the task. “You are an experienced copywriter who specialises in B2B SaaS” produces different output than no instruction at all.

This works for almost any domain: “You are a forensic accountant reviewing this for red flags”, “You are a senior engineer doing a code review”, “You are a sceptical editor looking for weak arguments.” The role frames how Claude approaches the problem.

Use the Word “Actually”

This sounds small but matters: adding “actually” to your request signals that you want substance over politeness. “Actually critique this” gets more honest feedback than “critique this.” “Tell me what’s actually wrong with this approach” short-circuits the tendency to be encouraging first and critical second.

Ask for the Counter-Argument

Claude is trained to be helpful, which can mean it agrees with your framing too readily. If you’re testing an idea, explicitly ask: “What are the strongest arguments against this approach?” or “What am I missing?” This surfaces the things a helpful assistant might otherwise soften.

Use Projects for Long-Running Work

Claude.ai’s Projects feature (in the paid plans) lets you maintain persistent context across conversations. If you’re working on a specific document, project, or ongoing task, upload the relevant files to a Project once and Claude will have that context every time you start a new conversation in that project.

This is significantly more efficient than pasting the same background information into every new chat.

Break Complex Tasks Into Steps

Claude handles multi-step tasks better when you break them down explicitly. Instead of “Write a complete go-to-market strategy,” try:

  1. “First, help me identify the three biggest assumptions in my go-to-market plan. Here’s the plan: [paste plan]”
  2. Then: “Now, for each assumption, what evidence would I need to validate it?”
  3. Then: “Based on this, what are the three highest-priority things to test in the next 30 days?”

Each step builds on the last, and you can redirect if Claude’s assessment at any step is off.

When Claude Gets It Wrong

If a response misses the mark, don’t just re-ask the same question. Tell Claude specifically what was wrong: “That’s too generic — I need this to be specific to the Australian regulatory context” or “The tone is too formal for what I need — make it conversational.” Specific corrections get better revisions than vague dissatisfaction.
